Appointment of New Director of Chemicals
National Occupational Health and Safety Commission Chief Executive, Helen L'Orange, today announced the appointment by the Governor-General of Dr Margaret Hartley as the Director of Chemicals Notification and Assessment.
The Director administers the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS), which plays an important part in the regulation of chemicals in Australia.
Under NICNAS new chemicals entering Australia and many existing chemicals are assessed for their health and environmental effects. Because the results of the assessments are available to companies introducing chemicals and to people in workplaces, the scheme contributes significantly to making workplaces safer and healthier.
Ms L'Orange said: "Dr Hartley's appointment comes at an important time as NICNAS moves from partial to full cost recovery.
"Dr Hartley's scientific skills and management abilities make her well qualified to take on the role of Director."
Dr Hartley is currently a Director in the Federal Therapeutic Goods Administration, is experienced in chemicals' regulation and has considerable scientific and academic experience.
Ms L'Orange also took the opportunity to thank the previous Director, Mr Warwick Pearse, for his leadership of NICNAS over the past six years, including through its establishment phase and recent consolidation.
