NOHSC Discusses Assessment of a Phase-out of Chrysotile
The discussions at the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) meeting, held in Brisbane on 18 October 2000, included consideration of a proposal that the use of chrysotile asbestos be phased-out in Australia.
Members agreed to inform Ministers responsible for OHS for their December 2000 meeting about this matter, so that they may consider whether to proceed with further examination of such a phase-out.
More information on the OHS effects of chrysotile asbestos is available in the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) publication Chrysotile Asbestos (Full Public Report on Priority Existing Chemical No. 9), February 1999.
