National OHS Improvement Framework
The National OHS Improvement Framework (the Framework) sets out a national approach for improving Australia's OHS performance over the next decade.
Commonwealth, State and Territory OHS regulatory authorities - as well as the peak bodies representing employers and employees - developed the Framework.
The fundamental role of the Framework is to reduce the incidence of work-related injury, disease and death in Australia. To achieve this goal the Australian Ministers responsible for OHS have endorsed the establishment of clear national objectives regarding OHS.
The Framework embraces the adoption of systemic approaches by government and industry. It is based on:
- locating responsibility for the elimination or control of risk at the source, be that with the designer, manufacturer or supplier, or in the workplace;
- continuous innovation to develop better, safer and healthier ways of working; and
- improvement through regular review and audit.
The National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC) is to review the Framework and provide annual reports to the December meeting of the Workplace Relations Ministers' Council on activities improving the national OHS infrastructure. NOHSC welcomes critical and instructive feedback on the Framework.
You can also download the Framework, and other recent NOHSC documents from the ASCC web site.
