Farstad Shipping (Indian Pacific) (Seacare)
Category 2: Best solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue
Farstad Shipping (Indian Pacific) is a wholly owned subsidiary of Farstad Shipping ASA, a publicly listed Norwegian Company. The company operates a fleet of over 50 specialist vessels supporting the offshore oil and gas industry worldwide.
Farstad Shipping (Indian Pacific) currently manages 17 of the company’s vessels operating in the Indian Pacific region – 14 of which are in Australian waters. Approximately 350 seafarers are employed in the region with the ships being managed from offices in Melbourne, Perth and Singapore.
The company has a very strong focus on health, safety and the environment. It has a number of initiatives to promote safety on board the fleet, including an incentive for ship crews which complete a six month period with no lost time injury or restricted work case injury and a pilot programme where individuals or groups enter a competition for the best safety initiative.
The crew of the MV ‘Far Saltire’ developed a training CD as an entry in the internal safety initiative competition for their work involving the use of high powered winches and large wires under tension. The CD provides an overview of the operation and the associated hazards which crew members can view prior to the start of the operation. The solution uses techniques, editing, dialogue and background music which relates directly to the target audience.
The solution provides an additional training tool that will assist in reducing risk to all personnel involved in this type of operation. In developing the solution the personnel involved emphasised the safety tools and controls necessary to address the different safety issues concerned. The solution has been circulated throughout the fleet both within Australian waters and overseas.
