Morsehead Home ACT
Category 1: Best workplace health and safety management system
Morshead Home is a not-for-profit aged care facility for military veterans with in excess of 105 staff members. It employed a full-time safety professional to fully develop and implement a safety management system.
The safety system is a comprehensive but user-friendly system that integrates risk management principles to eliminate or mitigate hazards and risks. Staff are fully trained in the use of the system and the documentation and tools are easy to use. The Morshead Home workers’ compensation insurer has overseen and fully endorsed the safety system. One of the most striking aspects is the level of management and staff commitment to making Morshead Home a safe workplace for all.
The commitment and foresight of the CEO, Board and staff members to engage a full-time safety professional has indeed paid dividends for the establishment of a safer workplace for staff and patients.
Aged care facilities provide a wonderful service to the community. Those that work in the sector are often called upon to deal with patient needs in a workplace that is all too often under resourced. The needs of the patients can, if not managed appropriately, override the safety of staff and carers. Morshead Home has recognised the need for more formal systems of work to identify and address the hazards and risks within the workplace, without sacrificing patient care.
