Brian Hoare is a laboratory chemist at Tasmanian Alkaloids. He has for many years been instrumental in delivering the most innovative and practical solutions to safety hazards, particularly in the laboratory environment. He has taken on key leadership roles within the organisation through the safety committee and as part of his day-to-day duties. Brian has a very good understanding of OHS practices and regularly represents his colleagues on consultative committees.
Brian has communicated with local, national and international experts in order to find the best solutions. Some examples of innovative ideas that Brian has come up with have been:
- a custom safety shower water collection device
- drying racks for laboratory glassware, and
- ergonomic improvements for laboratory weighing benches.
Brian was instrumental in establishing the laboratory Safety Committee, instigating regular safety meetings, and assisting in the safety training of laboratory staff.
His role in researching and implementing hazard control measures has been assessed to be of the highest standard, particularly in relation to the development and implementation of management systems.
