Mr Ron Christiansen Transport Workers Union (NSW)
Category 5: Best individual contribution to workplace health and safety
Ron Christiansen is employed as a pick up and delivery driver, and is a TWU delegate, at Toll Ipec. Fatigue for truck drivers is a major issue in the transport industry. Ron recognised the need for change within the industry, and took the initiative to commence discussion with his employer regarding the implementation of ‘Safe Driving Plans’ (SDPs). He faced many barriers including the reluctance of drivers to move towards the introduction of SDPs. He engaged in consultation with drivers, contractors and subcontractors to talk to them at length about SDPs and the need for change. As a result of his efforts, SDPs were in place at Toll Ipec prior to the introduction of new Long Distance Truck Driver fatigue legislation.
Ron also identified that a minimum standard of OHS knowledge and training had to be provided to employees to ensure they understood the basics of OHS. To achieve this, Ron liaised with his employer to introduce ‘Bluecard training’ for all new employees. Ron remains a facilitator of ‘Bluecard training’ for new employees.
