Primary Industries and Resources SA is the agency charged with the key responsibility for contributing to the sustainable planning and development of South Australia’s natural, industrial and community assets.
The agency manages a considerable diversity of functions, from fisheries management, agricultural research, biotechnology and minerals and petroleum management. Consequently the risk profile of the organisation is both varied and challenging, ranging from fatigue, driving, exposure to hazardous substances and adverse environmental conditions, manual handling and threats of occupational violence.
Primary Industries and Resources SA demonstrated clear leadership and commitment to achieving the government’s zero harm vision and 100 per cent return to work under the SA Government’s Workplace Safety Management Strategy in the Public Sector 2004-06. This supports the achievement of the South Australia Strategic Plan Target 2.10 – Increase Wellbeing.
The agency’s performance in the areas of injury prevention and management demonstrates a best practice approach to the integration of OHSW and risk management approaches with core business processes, resulting in sustainable long-term reductions in the severity and impact of work related injury and illness. PIRSA has consistently achieved and exceeded targets established under the government safety strategy.
The PIRSAFE system demonstrates comprehensive leadership and innovation in policy development and implementation, integrated strategic and business planning, performance measurement and evaluation, internal audit training and workplace consultation.
Primary Industries and Resources SA has developed and implemented the “PIRRISK” risk management program which is used to identify the risk profile of the organisation and to guide the development of OHSW. All Primary Industries and Resources SA business divisions and groups are regularly engaged in comprehensive hazard management strategies. The strong culture of risk awareness has contributed to exemplary performance in injury reduction.
