RailCorp Service Delivery Group Inner West Bankstown (NSW)
Category 4: Public sector leadership award for injury prevention and management
RailCorp New South Wales aims to provide safe, clean and reliable passenger services through its two brands, City Rail and Country Link.
RailCorp’s Innerwest/Bankstown region of 460 staff has demonstrated a continuing commitment to occupational health and safety through its Health and Safety Environment Committee.
Each member of the committee has played an integral leadership role to change the region’s cultural behaviours and attitudes towards safety and implement effective safety and continuous improvement initiatives and strategies.
As a result of the committee’s dedication and reputation within the region, lost time injuries and the total number of hazards have been reduced.
The committee is the driving force when it comes to safety, having developed skills in accident investigation, risk assessments, on site inspections, safety observations and hazard identification. Committee members have acted as mentors for all managers and staff in the region to ensure the application of safety awareness. Several new pilot initiatives have been successfully introduced such as ‘Avoiding Violence in the Workplace’, ‘Smooth Moves’ (manual handling) and the locally produced ‘Injury Management and Safety Reference Guide’ and the ‘Station Administration Reference Guide’.
The success of the Innerwest/Bankstown sub-group of RailCorp is not down to good luck but rather to commitment and hard work. This has not gone unnoticed with the sub-group being hailed as a champion within the Service Delivery Group and used as a benchmark for all other sub-groups.
