William Carey Christian School is an independent non-government school with 220 employees.
One of the challenges in a school workplace is the mixture of environments requiring management. Teaching, clerical and maintenance environments each have their own potential hazards. Combined with the wide range of ages that a Kindergarten to Year 12 school encompasses and the different expectations on employees and visitors, the workplace has the potential to be unsafe.
The school sought a mechanism to comply with OHS legislation and regulations and as a result, the first draft of the current Occupational Health and Safety Manual was written. This manual now embodies the school’s policies and procedures, forming a robust and effective system.
Management and the Board have fully supported this system. Three staff, including an OHS manager (a teacher) and two support staff (clerical), work on the OHS system and it is fully integrated within the organisation, involving all employees and students.
