Works Infrastructure Pty Ltd (Tasmania)
Category 1: Best workplace health and safety management system
Works Infrastructure is a division of Downer EDI Limited, an Australian listed company that provides comprehensive engineering and infrastructure management services to the public and private road, rail, power, telecommunications, mining and resource sectors in Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia, Hong Kong and the Pacific.
Works Infrastructure commenced operation in Tasmania in October 2003 following the sale of Civil Construction Corporation from the Tasmanian state government. It employs 114 people state-wide.
Works Infrastructure has an OHS management system which is integrated with the organisation’s quality and environmental management systems. The system is simple to understand and is easily applied to the numerous ‘high risk’ industries in which it operates. A strong management commitment to safety exists which is reflected in the management system through the incorporation of values and attitudes. The system is multi-faceted to meet the needs of the organisation and includes a wellbeing component. The system is applied in the workplace through the use of appropriate tools and a website also provides for ease of access to information.
Targets are established, recording processes are defined and performance is regularly monitored. Reportable incidents and performance measures go beyond the standard criteria. The effectiveness of the system is demonstrated by a single lost time incident in the past 12 months.
The management system is mature and of a very high standard, and incorporates the principles of continuous improvement.
