The Catholic Schools Office (CSO) of Broken Bay recognised the need to provide its 43 primary and secondary schools with systematic means to manage health and safety in their schools and to comply with substantially changing occupational health and safety (OHS) legislation.
The Office has systematically developed and implemented a safety improvement process since 2002, when a paper-based OHS Management System (OHSMS), support resource package and system audit were developed and adopted.
Now, the 43 Broken Bay schools implement an OHSMS that is much improved by the application of web, e-learning, document and information management technology. The result, CSOHS Online, provides all personnel with access to the OHSMS, its range of school-specific OHS support material and to a system audit tool which systematically tracks and records each school’s implementation of the OHSMS as a whole and of each system element.
Through CSOHS Online, a further 22 external organisations, as well as more than 820 other Australian schools and church communities are able to manage their health, safety and wellbeing. The injury frequency rate has decreased by 20 per cent in 2006-07, CSO’s premium has decreased by 40 per cent and the return to work rate has been kept stable for several years at 99 per cent.
