Pathways to Better Health Program 2006/07
The Department of Public Works (DPW) is the central lead agency for the Queensland Government in building asset management. The Department has approximately 5000 employees, of which around 2000 are field staff.
The scope of services the Department supplies necessitates a solid grounding in Workplace Health and Safety (WH&S), and places a high priority on the health and safety of its workers and in its multitude of workplaces, all of which are highly diverse.
In line with this focus, the DPW 2003-2005 Strategic Workplace Health and Safety Plan and framework emerged. Following this, the State Government’s Department of Industrial Relations developed the “Safer Workplaces” framework aimed at improving workplace health and safety performance in the Queensland public sector.
By building on these foundations, the DPW has sharpened its focus on WH&S and made outstanding progress with a series of initiatives under the Pathways to Better Health and Safety Program in 2006/07.
These initiatives included further development of the Pathways to Better Health Program; implementing the Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) software program; introducing an early intervention centre; and gaining accreditation to the AS/NZS 4801: Occupational Health and Safety Management System for the Department’s largest building unit, QBuild.
