Watpac Australia Pty Ltd, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, has developed a safe means of installing the 20,000 sqm of fabric membrane roof panels in the construction of Skilled Park stadium at Robina, which is to be the home of the Gold Coast Titans rugby league club. This was a good example of achieving the safe construction of a design that created a high risk for workers.
The roofing structure coupled with the fabric membrane roof panels of Gold Coast Stadium was a key feature to the design and covered 20 per cent of the stadium. One of the issues that Watpac faced was that the materials and construction methodology had never been used in Australia.
Workers needed to work from the steel, from platforms adjacent to the steel, under and over the roof at near horizontal and near vertical faces. This created a significant demand to secure safe work methods.
Falls were totally eliminated through the introduction of the working platform. As well as the platform, further safety measure and controls were implemented such as industrial rope access to scale the more vertical faces of the work area; installation of safe access ladders with travel restraint devises fitted; twin lanyard fall arrest safety harnesses used with the addition of Industrial rope access systems fitted; and incidental systems for preventing falling objects relating to the activity such as chin straps on hard hats and hand tool lanyards.
