What other organisations are doing for Safe Work Australia Week
It is encouraging to see that so many Australian businesses and organisations participated in
Safe Work Australia Week.
Below are just some of the ideas organisations came up with to mark the importance of occupational health and safety (OHS) in support of Safe Work Australia Week.
What did your organisation do? Let us know what activities your organisation hosted and be placed on our website as an example for others. Send what you did to info@ascc.gov.au.
Safety - it's everybody’s business.
Organisations that took up the safety challenge:
Hi Fert Pty Ltd
Hi Fert is a fertilizer company based in Melbourne.
Hi Fert hosted health and safety BBQs at each of their nine plants across Australia. Hi Fert management engaged all employees with a safety improvement presentation describing what has been completed on its Safety Improvement Plan for the year, and what is anticipated for the remainder of the year.
All employees received a promotional coffee mug and confectionery Kit Kat highlighting the ‘Take a break and talk safety’ campaign.
Short workshops with all employees and mangers were conducted to educate them about their roles and responsibilities when an injury occurs at work.
A newly elected Environment, Health and Safety representative were also announced for Hi Fert’s head office.
Colanda Centre
Colanda Centre is a residential care facility for the disabled located in regional Victoria.
The Centre developed a comprehensive programme of activities which ran during Safe Work Australia Week.

South Tweed Sports
South Tweed Sports is a sporting club located in Tweed Heads South in NSW.
The club asked all staff to take a good look at their work areas and practices during Safe Work Australia Week.
Staff will be asked to note their safety comments or concerns and the list was put on a whiteboard. Management and the OHS Committee prioritised and sorted the list. Management reported back to staff on the progress of any repairs.
The club also ran its annual fire drill during the week. Last year the drill was terrific in the sense that staff feedback after the evacuation was valuable in improving procedures. For example, when they evacuated across the road in broad daylight, a staff member asked ‘what if it were night?’ So the club bought a number of torches and orange fluoro vests so that in an emergency, staff could guide others in the dark more safely.
Australia Post
Motorcycle safety was the focus for Australia Post in Queensland and activities included guest speakers from Honda Australia, HART, Pro Honda and Morgan and Wacker motorcycle training who gave presentations about safety at various delivery centre facilities. Facilities also held either breakfasts or BBQs with competitions for safety ideas, staff briefings on safety and distribution of posters and pens.
There were similar activities in Australia Post Western Australia including a Health and Safety Quiz along with various BBQs, morning teas, distribution of posters and pamphlets to highlight the importance of safety.
Long Day Care Centre
This Bondi day care centre is thrilled to be a part of Safe Work Australia Week.
An OHS information board was put up in the staff room and during safety week, staff who contributed creative and useful ideas were rewarded with a massage. The board is an ongoing way to share OHS information.
Interested parents were also able to join staff on their monthly safety walk of the day care centre to gain a different perspective.
Daracon Group
Daracon is a civil engineering and construction business located in Wallsend, NSW. It employs over 500 personnel and engages in excess of 360 subcontractors.
As part of the promotion of Safe Work Australia Week, Daracon distributed information on the importance of stretching to all staff.
Daracon also held an ‘out of uniform day’ and morning tea with the theme, Be bright and not out of sight! Each staff member wore their brightest clothes and Safe Work goodies were distributed as prizes for outstanding participants.
Department of Defence
The Department of Defence actively promoted Safe Work Australia Week and ran a variety of activities for staff during the week.
Twenty-four different activities were organised, including the launch of regional OHS procedures, the launch of a new evacuation plan for the customer service centre at Singleton, lunch followed by a physical activity, safety trivia quiz, healthy BBQ breakfast, work area clean-up and a safety audit.
Safe Work Australia Week posters were distributed throughout the Canberra and regional bases and a display was set-up at Russell Offices promoting the week and OHS in general.
A ‘well-being walk’ also took place around Lake Burley Griffin, with about 150 people taking part. Safe Work Australia Week promotional materials were used as giveaways, and staff were supplied with hats and showbags, as well as fruit and water.
TAFE NSW Riverina Institute
Albury TAFE held a Health and Promotion Day, ‘Alternate-Day-on-the-Green’, during Safe Work Australia Week.
More than 1000 staff and students attended the day, which was extremely successful.
Students were impressed with the free Safe Work promotional items which were provided to encourage them to drink water and get healthy.
St George Hospital and Community Health Services, Sydney
The St George Hospital and Community Health Services is a large hospital in Sydney.
For Safe Work Australia Week:
- a message about safety was put on all employees’ pay slips
- each department received a 10 Tips to Stress Less card from the Mental Health Information Service and a back care booklet in addition to ASCC promotional products
- WorkCover posters were displayed around the facility
- a WorkCover inspector visited and gave a presentation to staff on OHS, particularly in relation to the health industry, and
- there was an email campaign each day, highlighting important safety issues and major hazards, accompanied by funny photos or clips – staff feedback was very positive in regards to using humour to help get the message across.
Note: The ASCC is in no way endorsing the products or safety record of the companies listed.
